These words not only show the drama of the situation but also the perception that victory was possible. The fact that anarchism was suppressed from the left and the right (as happened in the Soviet Union) is an indication that this wasn’t a movement linked to just one circumstance but rather was destined to endure.

In 1937, Santillan had a decisive meeting, intervening to promote the surrender of anarchist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Later, back in Buenos Aires, he would regret this decision.

Maybe, as Bakunin said so many times, the militant anarchist, with his demands on the self for purity, and his faith in humanity, has committed errors for which he will pay dearly. The methodological discussions that we’ve seen show that the doctrine is not to be valued just for itself, and perhaps anarchism had not found the best way to spread. But some ways were worse than others.
